knitting and movies

I'm in awe of Abbey's knitting - she is way past my ability and is on the home stretch of her cardi. She only has the lace hem to finish and the cardi is done.

The pattern is a Jo Sharp  using cotton.

Blocking is something very new to me - I'd never heard of it before but Abbey has done the research and tells me it helps keep knitting in its shape.

Movies...
We have hired some movies this week - the weather hasn't been very summery, nothing on TV so caught up on some DVD's from video shop.

The Call - oh my it was good! But made me wanna poop me pants.Tad scary for me - well worth a watch 4/5

We're the Millers - Would of been much better without the over the top crude humour which I didn't find funny or necessary, if anything degrading towards teen males. Saying that other parts of the movie are funny, predictable but funny The end trailer of bloopers was the funniest.3/5

A lovely movie, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Worth the watch 4/5

American Violet, sadly based on a true story 4/5

Side Effects was a tad depressing to begin with, a friend had warned us but to stay with it. Pleased we did as I enjoyed the cast especially Rooney Mara. But a tad to dark and gloomy for us 3/5

Now you See me had lots of twists and turns but went a tad flat. Worth a watch if nothing else on tv. 3/5

    1. The cardi has knitted darts (not sure if correct term) to give the cardi shape. Our daughter has taught herself to knit once a friend got her started about 8 years ago. (I'm not a knitter) Love Leanne

    1. Blocking is very new to me - Abbey said people kept talking about they had blocking to do and off she went to reserach.

  7. Amazing how quickly Abby has knitted that lovely cardigan. The color is reminds me of the ocean on a stormy day. I wish I could knit like that, but I have 2 left thumbs and don't have the dexterity needed to make the needles fly like Abby can. Blocking is a step long used by tailors & seamstress' to assure knitted sweaters & woolens retain their shape during pressing & especially after washing. For cottons, silk, cashmere and wool it is the only way to ensure that a sweater will fit you exactly the same after washing or while the sweater pieces are being knit. You just draw the outline of the sweater on a suitable piece of paper and then place the damp sweater on the tracing and gently stretch to conform to the tracing lines. Then slip the paper out from beneath the item & let dry flat on a towel. I often see people hang damp sweaters on a hanger to dry and they are shocked that the next time they put the sweater on it is deformed with huge shoulders, sleeves long enough for a gorilla and long shapeless torso. The person is dumbfounded as to how the sweater got that way & the sweater is thrown in the bag with the thrift store donations. I'm happy my Mom taught me about blocking when I learned to sew. Blocking only takes a few minutes of time to do, but the garment will fit properly every time. Abby does such beautiful work. Abby should be so proud of the skills she has acquired over the years she has pursued her knitting skills. Her work is beautiful & how nice that she can make anything she sets her mind to.
It looks like you had quite a Summer film fest at the cottage. I saw The Call & it was a good tense thriller. I think the Song for Marion looks like a film I might enjoy. I will have to see if it is on Netflix which is where I get most of the movies I watch. Were the Millers sounds about like I thought it would be. They have repeatedly shown commercials for it for on TV for the past 2 months. I could tell from the trailer that it was not for me. The last comedies I was surprised that I like were the first 2 Hangover films. A bit of raunchy behavior, but mostly very funny and good story line. I laughed so much my cheeks ached. No, not those cheeks. Cheeks as in my face you naughty minded people.
Thanks for the nice post & reviews.

    1. Abbey's knitting is nice and neat, a tight knitter gets such even, neat results I think.
The call was scary - I shouldn't watch such scary movies. It gives me the willies - doesn' help that at 2am I hear our gate and a van drives up the driveway....an ambulance... they had the wrong home but gave me a fright.

  8. The Call is on my wish list of movies to watch, and I don't really like too scary movies either, so thanks for the heads up. Abbey's knitting is superb! I have an American friend (I used to work with her husband) who loves knitting like Abbey and her sister is a knitting designer. Her blog is www.blackberryrambles.blogspot.com if she wants to check it out sometime. Do you think the Call would be appropriate for a 14 year old boy? He wants to watch it.

    1. Thanks for blog head up Abs will have a nose. Yes I think a sensible 14 year old lad like your boy will be fine. Al ot is left to imagination rather than showing too much gore - which can be a bad thing with an imagination like mine SMILE. Let me know what he thinks of it (I wouldn't recommend Were the Millers)
